"The art in waste" Reading

The article ‘The art in waste’ by Denise Scot Brown talks about Basurama which is a movement that looks at all forms of waste, its reuse and the study of waste as an artistic resource. Everything goes to a cycle of birth, use and then death even cities and buildings. The writer discusses the problems with urban planning and the cycles and problems of urban renewal and how it relates to the waste cycle and the conflicts it brings. She talks of Lynch’s book “ Wasting Away where he introduces the concept of “Waste Well”. This involves the cycles of birth and death plus recycling. He also raises the issue whether a building should be preserved or not and the "preservation is so temporary." She also refers to a number of concepts: Morphology – study of form. When new technologies are created new waste is produced and need new forms of recycling. Paleotechnology – use of older technology for a better use. Eg using car types for shoe soles. ...

Abandoned Materials Market Critique

In the Abandoned Materials market showed a theme of abandoned childhood that across three levels which transported the customers back to a nostalgic feel of the 90’s and early 2000’s. The theme was an interesting take of the abandon materials but I felt that more thought had gone into the nostalgic memories than the abandon materials overall theme. Within the market itself there was recycled and reused materials retrieved from other markets to fill spaces which was a smart idea reusing materials as they “look at the everyday environment that surrounds us and see it as an artistic and cultural resource.” (The art in waste. Denise Scott Brown. Urban Distortions book. Basurama06).  Most stalls fitted one of four themes, hand/eye coordination games, polls/surveys, creative drawing/writing tasks and visual experience which meant that it was repetition of ideas through the stalls. Maybe this could have been avoided with better communication on the differences between the concepts of the ...

Immaterial Markets Participant Reflection

In the market of Immaterial Labours was overall an engaging market to walk through as each customer must go through emotions from stall to stall. Overall theme of emotions was good tactic in bringing different stalls together, although some felt like a side thought to the emotions theme. The level D layout was interesting with the exit of one flowed into the entry of the next meaning that everyone saw the stalls. But in other areas we were guided by ‘guides’ that meant that I did not see or participate in some stalls. When at some of the stalls there was no greeting or communication at the door to say what the stall was which would have been nice. Wasn’t sure what the currency was inside the market. I think it was the use of Zapper app, which wasn’t easy to use, and in the end it was too difficult to work. Overall it was an impressive market that groups have put together that interacted well with the participants. The market of Immaterial Labours was an engaging and fun market. The...
