The article ‘The art in waste’ by Denise Scot Brown talks about
Basurama which is a movement that looks at all forms of waste, its reuse and
the study of waste as an artistic resource.
Everything goes to a cycle of birth, use
and then death even cities and buildings.
The writer discusses the problems with urban planning and the cycles
and problems of urban renewal and how it relates to the waste cycle and the
conflicts it brings.
She talks of Lynch’s book “ Wasting Away where he introduces the
concept of “Waste Well”. This involves the cycles of birth and death plus
recycling. He also raises the issue whether a building should be preserved or
not and the "preservation is so temporary."
She also refers to a number of concepts:
Morphology – study of form. When new technologies are created new
waste is produced and need new forms of recycling.
Paleotechnology – use of older technology for a better use. Eg using
car types for shoe soles.
Satisficing – making decision with limited time and imperfect
information.
